ECOTONE

A weathered steel and wood canopy creates an architectural ecotone — a transition where inside and outside blur and overlap.

CONCEPTS EXPLORED

The clients asked for a more modern entry to this otherwise nondescript home. After obtaining a variance to expand the existing foyer into the front yard setback, I approached the design through the idea of an architectural ecotone — a zone where two environments overlap and blend. A weathered steel and wood canopy redefines the threshold between house and landscape. Curved timber slats bend like branches, filtering light and view, while rusted steel anchors the form to the earth. Inside, the rhythm of the boards softens and flows upward, a quiet echo of the canopy beyond — turning the act of entry into a passage through shade, texture, and air. In this layered transition between exterior and interior, architecture becomes an ecotone — a living overlap where structure and nature coexist.
