Forest Deck

A family in the foothills east of Denver needed to expand their existing wood deck and add exterior living space outside their living room. As One designed an organically shaped deck that created a spacious play area above an otherwise inaccessible, steep forested hillside.  At the center, a hole is cut out for a pine tree and allow light to filter under the deck, illuminating the front door of the house.  A corrugated metal and wood screen rises from the ground, turns to become a roof, and then latches onto the top of the deck in the form of a built in bench.  This feature protects the below deck parking area from rain, snow, and the prevailing winter winds and created a seating area on the deck.   Angled columns vary the typical vertical posts and enliven the entry sequence to the house.  The deck will be clad in sustainably harvested cedar decking and coated with a natural, non-toxic wood finish.
